2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
The new appointee assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified staff about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a more defined vision.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining the project with a renewed focus, aiming to satisfy community desires.
The news echoes a comparable step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock development group.
Below is the complete message from the president's memo:
Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative creators we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the necessity for a clearer identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the feedback to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed direction - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce the new hire as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. Following a period of talks, he officially joins us on the specified date.
His leadership and experience in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most popular franchises in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving him soon. We are all looking forward to persist witnessing the evolution of the game in the months to come.
The President
The appointee currently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at major gaming companies in various production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year alongside a public demo. Initially, 31st Union described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch states. "Face the rivals with fresh skills, stakes, and obstacles that evolve every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, put it on the line, and hope your team can earn top ranking? The decision is up to you."
Project Ethos has not yet received an official release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can look forward to additional details as creation continues.
