Education Reductions in Prisons Put at Risk Community Security, Watchdog Reports

Decreases to educational initiatives within correctional institutions are hindering inmates' work and training options, eventually creating danger to community security, according to a recent report from a prison watchdog organization.

Although activities went ahead, full-time positions generally engaged prisoners for just a limited time per day, with many roles divided into part-time slots to extend limited resources further.

Correctional service has a responsibility to protect the community by making prisoners less inclined to commit crimes again when they are released, but frequently it is failing to meet this obligation.

The best administrators understand that jails, and in the end our society, are safer if inmates are purposefully engaged, and that education, skill development and employment play a vital role in motivating inmates to reform.

Unless officials in the prison system take the provision of effective training and training more seriously, it is hard to see how extremely high reoffending rates can be lowered.
