The Explanation

The bag creates a mini terrarium, capturing moisture near the plant. Think of it as recreating the tropical environment – the humid microclimate where ferns flourish. This won't water the plant for you, but it significantly reduces moisture loss and promotes delicate young leaves to open up.

The Experiment

I used this trick on a Boston fern that seemed beyond saving. After 10 days in its misty cocoon the potting medium was moist to the touch and small green curls started emerging. By the end of the month, the plant was noticeably fuller and greener.

The Conclusion

This is not a miracle cure and some fronds might drop some fronds along the way, but the plastic bag method can truly rescue a fern near death. At no expense, it’s one of the most effective resuscitation methods available.
