Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD issued surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
