New Year's Celebrants Urged to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Forecast Throughout the UK

Forecasters have indicated a chilly start to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Alerts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," said the weather service.

Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be low, making extra layers a necessity, according to forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on trains and buses.

Temperatures Expected to Plummet Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Alerts Released

At the same time, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this meant the weather was expected to trigger notable consequences across health and social care services. This includes a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is utterly key.
