NY Unveils Portal for Residents to Submit Immigration Images After Arrests of 4 American Citizens

New York state AG has launched a recent reporting form asking citizens to share images and footage of ICE operations around the state. This step follows a day after a high-profile ICE raid shook Manhattan's Chinatown, prompting large-scale protests.

US Citizens Detained In Enforcement Action

A congressional representative revealed during a midweek briefing that four citizens were detained and detained for "nearly 24 hours" after the previous day's operation. Protests erupted in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"Each citizen has the right to live without fear," state officials declared in a release.

"Anyone who observed and captured ICE activity during the raid, I encourage you to submit that material with the authorities. We are dedicated to examining these submissions and evaluating any violations of law."

Form Details

The form provides options to submit images and video footage of the incident, as well as a field to indicate where it occurred. Prior to sending, submitters must check a option that acknowledges that "the attorney general may use any materials, images, or footage in a official report, such as in a court case or government document."

Information about the Manhattan Operation

The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say featured dozens of government officers, took place in a famous area of the city where counterfeit purses, items, goods and other goods are sold daily in large quantities – frequently to sightseers.

Footage of the incident depict several masked and armed federal agents zip-tying and detaining a person, and forcing aside bystanders. Crowds of locals followed the officers along the roads. An armored truck was noticed traveling down the Manhattan avenues.

Leadership Statements

At a Wednesday press conference held with the immigrant advocacy group, the congressman, a Democrat, said that four American citizens were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where US citizens should be detained for without cause." He said the individuals were released on the following day with no legal action taken.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he remarked. "This is a militarized effort to create conflict. It is simply a justification to provoke conflict for this administration to deploy the military to stop unrest that they themselves caused."

Broad Criticism

Anger over the ICE raid rapidly grew – every political contenders condemned the incident, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Repeatedly, the federal government opts for oppressive displays that create fear, not safety. It has to end," a political candidate wrote.

The city's advocacy organizations voiced concern as well.

"Immigration agents descended on the neighborhood with armored transports, masked agents and tactical gear to target local sellers attempting to earn income. This action had no connection to public safety and focused completely on intimidating residents and communities," said the head of a rights organization.

ICE Policies

ICE policy forbids the holding of citizens and the bureau has stated it does not arrest or detain US citizens. However, independent reporting has discovered that more than 170 citizens have been detained unlawfully by federal agents during the period of the present government.

Current Situation

ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in NY and nationwide lately.

A mid-October raid in central NYC was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the current administration. Rallies targeting federal operations are ubiquitous as are accusations of force and abusive practices.

Latest, a submission provided by legal entities alleged medical neglect of pregnant women in ICE facilities.
