The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point throughout his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the post-war period.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, was not quick to announce he would live there immediately following his victory in November.

"This decision was based on the security of my family and the imperative to dedicating my complete efforts on enacting the platform on affordability the city's residents elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district renowned for its abundance of immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live there, the community will always live a part of me and my work," he said.

Political Debate

During his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his opponents, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit although he came from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment very different than his previous Astoria apartment.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is under rent control, which means the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

City residents see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
