A charity drive is aiming to launch a traditional song from Palestine to the peak of the festive singles chart. The campaign aims to provide aid to communities in Gaza while also highlighting Palestinian artistic heritage.
Musician and artist Brian Eno, who features on the track, stated that the release called 'Lullaby' represents a chance to stand with Palestinians this festive season. He noted the potential for an unlikely festive coup.
“That would be amazing if that occurred, yes,” he said. “I wouldn't be completely disappointed if it fails to, holiday tracks are a category of their own.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who features in the reimagining of a cultural piece called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the track's defiant core message.
“It occupies a profound significance for a lot of people,” Barghouti said. “The message is that I would prefer a dignified death than exist without freedom. That’s the main theme of the song; we desire to exist a dignified life that we merit as a people.”
The song was recorded in the wake of a large-scale benefit event held in September. Originally intended to be captured during the live event, the piece was cut from the show due to scheduling overruns.
The notable list of performers contributing to Lullaby encompasses a range of acclaimed names from the music world. All participated in the September show, which reportedly raised a substantial amount for relief efforts.
Lullaby was crafted by a group of talented individuals. The single showcases a combination of the traditional Arabic lyrics with contemporary English verses.
The organizers behind the initiative have emphasized that their objective is to raise as much as possible for a specific fund. These donations will be allocated to initiatives supporting Palestinians through an partnering humanitarian organization.
“There is no a fixed goal,” a representative explained. “We’ll go for as much as possible. Obviously, the higher the total, the greater the impact. Every penny goes out to Gaza.”
The reality in the region was described as its widespread damage, with a vast majority of buildings said to be in ruins or severely impacted.
“Against that backdrop, a handful of millions is unlikely to make an enormous impact. But I think what does make a difference is above all raising awareness for this issue and demonstrating there’s another side to the story.”
The single 'Lullaby' is set to be released at the end of the week. Additionally, a full recording of the solidarity show will be made accessible to view on a major video platform from the 19th of December.
