Triple NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic sustained a "gut-wrenching" injury to his knee when the Denver Nuggets lost by a score of 147-123 to the Heat.

Jokic was hurt in the latter stages of the opening half in an inadvertent coming together with team-mate Spencer Jones.

The other player stepped on the foot of Jokic, who immediately collapsed to the floor grabbing his leg.

The veteran player, who is leading the league season in boards and assists, recorded 21 points and eight assists in the matchup prior to incurring the setback.

Jokic will undergo an MRI scan on Tuesday to assess the seriousness of the injury.

"Immediately, Jokic realized he was hurt," stated Nuggets coach Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Whoever that is injured, it's gut-wrenching, most notably somebody as talented as Jokic. We'll find out more tomorrow."

"We will continue as a team. Clearly, right now, I'm more worried primarily about Jokic as a person and the disappointment of facing an event of that nature."
