While Swimmers Ran From Attack, Widely-Shared Photo Shows Lifeguard Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, views the famous beach as her personal space. On a recent weekend evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, noticed loud noises ringing out around the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching recounts. She left her residence, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks on display told her a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the road, talking to a couple who had rushed up the hill in their swimwear, she became aware of someone coming up from behind. It was a beach patrol officer, sprinting towards Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was the only one moving in the opposite way that all the others was trying to escape from, while holding that big kit and unshod … He was sprinting at something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to move in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely maximum effort running.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage In the Wake of Crisis

The photograph taken by Ching of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous acts of courage in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, police and paramedics caring for numerous those hurt.
